New Booster Section

The launch stand 'manifacturing' gave me enough satisfaction to start wondering about a scale tower truss based on the same materials and tooling.

I then played around the CAD a bit to design a new booster section that could deal well with the truss tower:

. the new MMT support frame (the first one on the left) {pic.1}

. the booster section side-by-side comparison {pic. 2-3}

I shortened the MMTS to 3 grain AT casings or Pro38 2G but they still look horrible... that's all I can do @ this scale!

The tower truss was slightly modified here and there to fit better and to be a bit easier to be put together.

The tower truss shouldn't interfere with the launch rods: after some tries the clearance was met and the result is clear in the following renderings {pic. 1-2-3}.

Giacomo,

how about using a single grain Warp H motor? That should do the job, and it would look scale enough, if you don't mind only small exhaust flames (or lack thereof).

Well, a Warp will just be "too fast" I guess. White will be much nicer.

Warp-9 flames are quite impressive, if you get them on the picture. Unfortunately, they're are more flashes than flames, blink at the wrong moment, and you don't see them Sad

Gentlemen, thank you for your advises.

Fact is, high-drag designs hate fast-burning motors!

On the other hand they do love slow burners with relativly low average thrust. It makes sense.

High drag designs do not experiment any coast phase: motor burnout = apogee most of the times.

Some other times apogee occurs under thrust, that's fairly common and it doesn't mean anything bad (it may happen in light winds when the vehicle points into the wind from the very beginning of the flight due to overstability).

That's why fast burners are out of selection: high speed = (high drag)^2 = very low altitude = not enough height for a successful recovery.

Unfortunately the 38 mm motor range lacks some serious long burners so we may already be on the edge with the 'longest' available reloads!

iPowerRocket considers this extreme case, where vertical velocity is negative at burnout, as an indication of too weak a motor, displays an error message on the trajectory screen, and rejects the motor in on-the-fly-simulation. So do the trajectory nomograms, the mass scale on the nomograms is chosen so that this does not happen.

Not to mention that Warp-motors aren´t easy to light simultaneously at all!

But let´s get back to that beautiful building process...

Well, any Composite can be lit in 20-40ms, it's all a question of propperly designed / sized igniters...

Right away Sir!

Ok, after the virtual tweaking the real work began:

. here are the pieces for the new MMTs support {pic. 1}

. put together {pic. 2-3}

. ready for insertion into the shorter booster section {pic. 4}

It's priming day as well! {pic. 1-2}.

One last thing I didn't point out is that I never invested that much in shaping the intersection at the vertex members of the launch stand!

I went for local shaping of thickened epoxy + filling and sanding {pic. 3-4}...

Here I am! For those thinking about me having quit this project... I salute you!

Most of the time was dedicated to

. finishing the plugs
. making some of the molds

Those are the kind of activity that makes you wonder why you volounteered for such a long and painstaking torture!

I also added a few compulsory references to the capsule:

. the split line between the capsule and its tip

. 2 styrene tabs (1 between the capsule and the tip and the other between the capsule and the heastshield)

. 4 little bulks that lock the BPC to the capsule

They all aid in giving a permanent coupling reference between the tip, the capsule, the BPC and the heatshield {pics. 1-2-3}

Drawing and scribing the split line took me a while and this is what I came up with... {pic. 4}

Making the molds.

I need to make 3 molds: the capsule, the heatshield and the booster skirt.

The capsule and the heatshield share the same parting board so I have to make one at the time.

Being the capsule the biggest I started with it along with the way smaller booster skirt.

The process was long and painful and I did not take (m)any pictures.

Plug preparation involved 2 layers of priming wax (1 per day) and 2 layers of PVA release agent (1 per day) = 4 days lost + 1 more day for total drying.

Lay-up involved the following coats:

. 1 layer of microballoons-thickened resin (home-made gelcoat)
. 1 layer of f/g cloth in the 200 gr range
. 1 layer of core material in the form of 5 mm thick absorber

EVERY layer needs the previous one to be partially cured so take your time and wait for the resin to be tacky!

It took me one daylight to complete and almost 5 kilos of resin (yes, thank you absorber!)...

Results are satisfying, parting the smaller booster skirt was a breeze: the double PVA layer peels off like a strong film! {pic. 1}

Shiny mold, as expected! {pic. 2}
