I still would not suggest to use RC for staging
This would be drawing the pilots full attention in the critical launch phase. Rather have an on-board sequence do its work, once the liftoff-booster has been ignited!

Cheers

E-Matches to light J135?
But not the e-match alone then!

Of course not.

Hi Giacomo

Great Plane that you're building!

In my glider I used a normal controller for R/C electrical powerd models. 8 cells of a NiCd or NiMH battery are enough for a first fire or Magnlight igniter. Maybe that could fit for your needs?

Thank you Andi!

If you say it works I do not doubt it and it sounds better than 12V...

How many mAh?

No, I do agree, RC would not be used for staging purposes but simply to light the motor after the glider has been towed to height like a regular sailplane!

Tow - release - glide almost back to the gorund - ignition - height gain - 2nd glide back - landing.

This way a G12 could be used for the very first test flights as a pure glider + climbing under 'minor' (1:1) thrust profiles.

I've been considering your inputs in the past few days and I decided that the better solution is to increase the MMT diameter to house 3 x 32mm G12s:

1. the ~36 N avg. thrust may get it off the pad on its own and

2. the 7+ seconds burntime meets the 'scale duration' that we are looking for.

Plus they're blue thunder and clustering shouldn't be too much of an issue.

Once that room is made for 3x 32mm every other option is open. New MMT will be 3".

Mmm, I am a bit sceptical if you are not overpowering it. 7 seconds of >3g (3g in vertical climb, much more if you keep the elevation lower, what you may want!
I suggest considering an interchangeable motor mount inset, letting you play with different configurations.
Or maybe a "motor revolver"! That would give you some burn time!
Motor 1: Launch
Motor 2 & 3: G12 for coasting / climbing.

Clustering small AP motors always is some sort of an issue! Wink

Yes, the total peak thrust would be ~60 N according to the specs and the burntime is more than 8 seconds (always according to the specs).

Plus, the avg. thrust is really flat @ 10 N so you're right when you say that the g's would be 3 for all the burntime.

BUT:

1. I doubt the LOW will be less than 1500 gr and that loads the model with 4 g @ lift-off and around 2.5 g for the rest of the powered flight;

2. in case one engine misfires the other 2 will provide enough peak-thrust (2 x 20 N) to allow for a safe landing pattern.

Juergh hat folgendes geschrieben:

Yes, the 'real' MMT groups are interchangeable, only the 3" MMT is epoxied to the fuse (see attached pic).

That's another good point worth of being studied in detail as numbers get closer to final values.

Thank you for all the inputs!

You are welcome. Exchanging thoughts is one of the interesting aspects of any project, one never has all possible ideas, i.m.h.o.
We are seeing that constantly at our rocket workplace, where the most "liked" phrase (after completing some work of course) is "why didn't you simply ..... " Twisted Evil

Yet another option is to adapt one of the 32mm MMTs down to 29mm. The 29mm motor is used as a booster to launch the vehicle. After that, the G12s are airstarted via RC.

The selection of 29mm motors is quite big, so it shouldn't be a problem to find a suitable one.
A single motor for the critical boost phase eliminates the cluster specific failure modes. Its short burn time limits the risks associated with a new and unknown vehicle, because the flyer can at least partially verify the performance of the vehicle before igniting the cruise motors. However, airstarting the G12s may be tricky.

Not really - I never had a failure in igniting an RMS-RC Motor. FIxing the igniter in the correct position is the most important point because the BT-RC motors are endburners.

All the best

Not really, if it isn't a cluster to air-start.
I wouldn't hesitate to use the copperhead that comes with the motor to airstart it. All it takes is propper preparation
http://www.argoshpr.ch/articles/pdf/Copperhead.pdf
and measuring the igniter resistance after installation. If it is between 1 and 4 ohms, it will be fine.
You can separate the (contact) end using a little bit of heat and solder a pair of wire to it, for propper connection to the on-board system.
Again, avoid that the igniter is dropped, rather have it trail behind the aircraft.
Sand the grain a bit and everything will be fine.

Have a powerful onboard battery and a relais, more isn't needed.

Take care

Juerg

Twisted Evil two writing "not really (difficult)" in parallel, quite encouraging, isn't it?

OK, I got back to the workbench and I did a few things.

First, let me say that upgrading the MMT diameter to 3" has some advantages, the most important being the fact that the tube now mates the upper and lower keels providing a better thrust-spreading joint {pic.1}.

Retro-fitting the new 3" MMT into the already sheeted fuse is tricky and you cannot end up with the cleanest epoxy job of your life.

I had to remove the stab saddle and I had to enlarge the holes into the formers from 60 mm to around 78 mm {pic.2}.

Next I had to open some holes into the sheeting to gain access to the joints and I found an epoxy-loaded syringe with the CA fine-tip applicator to be a good ally for reaching every nook and cranny (ok, not exactly EVERY) {pic.3}.

BTW, the new MMT is a 19 cm long LOC airframe tubing without its original glassine layer and with a 1" long PML 3" coupler as a thrust-ring {pic.1}.

Once satisfied with the messy gluing I sanded the stab saddle again and I filled the holes with scrap balsa {pic.2-3}.

I epoxied the new stab saddle in place and I sanded it to match the fuse contour.

Please note that the 1.5mm ply saddle protrudes past F6 (last bulkhead) to shield the stab from the hot exhaust gases.
